Anglo Platinum's forecast on track despite damaged smelter 15th February 2008

Anglo Platinum's full-year platinum output forecast remains unchanged despite damage to a furnace at its Polokwane smelter in South Africa.

The world's biggest platinum producer said it expects to meet its output target of 2.4 million ounces, according to the Regulatory News Service.

Excess smelting and refining capacity will mean that production is not affected after a "slag run out" occurred at the Polokwane smelter.

It will take four to six weeks to repair the equipment damaged in the incident which saw shares in the firm drop 2.5 per cent to R1,160 in Johannesburg trading.

Anglo Platinum made their forecast for full-year platinum output on Monday.

Platinum production from mining operations decreased by six per cent to 2.47 million ounces last year after reduced labour efficiency and employee safety interventions affected the firm.
