Anglo Platinum focuses on safety 2nd November 2007

Anglo Platinum has linked up with the United Association of South Africa (UASA), which represents mineworkers in South Africa, to improve its safety record.

The mining giant has agreed the partnership in an effort to reduce the number of safety incidents at its operations and the UASA has said that a recently established Central Partnership Forum will launch the efforts to improve safety.

"The first step will be the formation of a working group, consisting of senior management, middle-management and supervisors and union representatives," announced Franz Stehring, Divisional Manager responsible for the minerals sector in UASA.

The work of that group will begin on Monday and it is hoped that its impact will be twofold, helping reduce worker injuries and improve production.

"The death or injury of one mineworker is one too many, and we should jointly find solutions to avoid the situation in a true partnership fashion," concluded Mr Stehring.
