Anglo Platinum 'committed' to zero harm 7th December 2007
Anglo Platinum has announced that it remains fully committed to the principle of zero harm.
According to Mining Weekly, the company's interim report has outlined its commitment to improving safety at its operations in South Africa, so as to bring the platinum division into line with Anglo American's overall employee safety strategy.
It is hoped that the move will result in an improvement in the company's safety record, which resulted in Anglo Platinum Chief Executive Ralph Havenstein resigning earlier this year.
Anglo Platinum has been instigating a staggered shutdown of all its Rustenburg shafts so that all employees can be made fully aware of their responsibilities and the safety procedures that are in place at the mines.
The company revealed that this process is set to continue throughout 2008 to ensure that all staff are fully informed.
Platinum production has been reduced below initial expectations over the course of 2007 at Anglo Platinum due to the safety measures being put in place.
Earlier this week, South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) launched a nationwide strike to highlight the issue of safety at mines in the country.
