Anglo Platinum close to empowerment target 12th July 2007

The world's largest platinum miner, Anglo Platinum, is understood to be close to agreeing two major black economic empowerment (BEE) deals.

Francis Petersen, Head Strategist at Anglo Platinum, has reported that the company is on the brink of completing the two deals that will ensure it will meet its targets for BEE integration by 2009, Resource Investor reports.

Mr Petersen has said that the mining firm should be in a position to seal the deals by the end of this year or during the first few months of 2008, with the principles of the two deals already agreed with the group, its prospective partners and the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME).

Under the terms of the empowerment charter, mining firms must have at least 15 per cent black equity ownership by 2009, rising to at least 26 per cent by 2014.

Anglo Platinum has been discussing for some time with the DME as to how it can meet these targets.
