Anglo Platinum announces new chairman 7th November 2006

Fred Phaswana

The world's largest platinum miner has unveiled its new chairman after Barry Davison stepped down from the position.

Fred Phaswana will take over the reigns at Anglo Platinum at the end of the year, when Mr Davison will retire after 33 years at Anglo American, 18 of which were at the company's platinum operations.

Mr Phaswana has a large amount of experience and is a member of the board at Anglo American. He is currently chairman of both Anglo American South Africa and Transnet, as well as being a non-executive director of Naspers.

Mr Davison welcomed the appointment of his successor, saying: "He is widely respected and the Board will be strengthened by his judgment and perspectives."

The work of Mr Davison was recognised by Mr Phaswana, who added he was "pleased" to play an important part in the platinum industry, which he believes will continue to add value to the company and to South Africa as a whole.

In July this year, Anglo Platinum announced a six per cent increase in platinum levels on the same period in 2005, reaching 1.34 million ounces.
