Anglo American opens up safety programme to mining industry 19th May 2010
Anglo American is set to make its award-winning safety strategy available across the global mining industry, it emerged on Monday (17th May).
The Safety Risk Management Programme, which was introduced in 2008, has reduced fatalities by 29 per cent and the number and severity of lost-time injuries by 27 per cent.
As a result, the company has decided to offer the practices to companies in countries such as South Africa, which has struggled with mine safety in recent year.
"[The programme] is a critical element of our own safety improvement strategy and is helping to improve safety across our operations by introducing the use of proven best practice risk-control strategies and establishing a common understanding," said Anglo American Chief Executive Cynthia Carroll.
Conceived in partnership with the University of Queensland in Australia, the programme involves courses for senior executives and line managers, with 4,000 Anglo officials already reaping its benefits.
Anglo American, which was founded in 1999, is primarily listed on the London Stock Exchange and is one of the largest mining conglomerates in the world.
