Amplats, NUM agree 2-year pay deal 31st August 2011
South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) have agreed a two-year pay deal.
In a statement, the union said the world's number one producer of platinum group metals will increase wages by between eight and ten per cent.
The pay rises will depend on the category of worker. The NUM had previously demanded a 15 per cent wage hike.
"The offers accepted are ten per cent for the lowest paid workers for year one and 8.5 per cent for the highest paid workers for year one," NUM chief negotiator Oupa Komane told Business Day.
In the second year, he added, the lowest paid workers would receive a wage increment of nine per cent, while the highest earners would get eight per cent.
Pay negotiations with Lonmin and Northam Platinum will resume shortly, while talks with Impala Platinum are headed for arbitration.
