'Strong but intricate' platinum jewellery designs dominate at BaselWorld 26th March 2010

More structured designs were on show at this year's BaselWorld watch and jewellery show, it was suggested yesterday (25th March).

Platinum Guild International (PGI), which is the worldwide marketing arm for platinum, revealed that engineered themes were central to the event, National Jeweler reports.

According to the body, strong lines, tubular shapes, chains and perforated features formed the basis of the sturdy yet delicate pieces created by jewellers for the show.

"Using the urban landscape as a point of inspiration, designers are creating jewelry ripe with repeating geometric motifs, from stacked rings and hoop or drop earrings featuring concentric circles to the omnipresent, ever-popular chain link bracelets and necklaces," National Jeweler noted.

PGI explained that this design approach was particularly effective as platinum can create solidity in apparently hollow forms through its density, while also being strong enough to hold intricate gems in place.

BaselWorld, an international show held in Basel, brings together about 2,100 exhibitors from over 45 countries every year.
