'Promising outlook' for platinum-based drug 17th November 2005

Tests carried out on a new platinum-based drug created by Spectrum Pharmaceuticals have produced promising results, the company has claimed.

Announcing a presentation on its satraplatin drug candidate, Spectrum revealed that preclinical trials had found a combination of satraplatin and paclitaxel have the effect of producing a therapeutic synergy in the tumour model.

The best effect was had when the two were administered sequentially, the company said.

According to Spectrum, the results of these trials could be beneficial in developing appropriate dosages and a combination therapy, building on earlier work carried out in this area.

"As an oral compound, satraplatin provides dosing flexibility, even when combined with an intravenously administered drug," explained Rajesh Shrotriya, chairman, chief executive and president of Spectrum.

Satraplatin is a member of the platinum family of compounds, which have become increasingly used in the tackling of a variety of cancers over the past two decades.
