"Gold to be used alongside pgm in autocatalysts?" 11th December 2007
The World Gold Council (WGC) has announced a new partnership with emission control technologies developer Nanostellar that is aimed to increase demand for such technology.
The deal aims to see long-term growth of the use of gold in the automotive catalyst market, where the precious metal will be used alongside traditional emission technology metals such as platinum and palladium.
According to the WGC, the inclusion of gold into traditional catalysts can help to cut noxious emissions by as much as 40 per cent more than simply using pure platinum catalysts.
However, the drive to improve emission control technologies, as more countries introduce targets on emissions, will also see an increase in demand for platinum group metals (pgms) for use in the catalysts alongside gold.
James Burton, Chief Executive of the WGC, said: "The auto catalyst market is a large and important one for the platinum group metal producers and we are excited to be entering this new arena. We are also pleased to see gold play a role in an application with undoubted environmental benefits."
Pankaj Dhingra, Chief Executive at Nanostellar, added: "WGC's marketing expertise coupled with our technical knowledge should prove a powerful combination in winning advocates for our new product."
