The manufacturers of heavy-duty engines for commercial vehicles and off-highway, marine and stationary applications continue to face major challenges. On the one hand, worldwide exhaust emissions standards for all applications will become stricter in the future, while on the other hand increasing fuel costs mean that powertrains must become more and more efficient. In the long-term, the finite nature of fossil energy resources will also determine the future course of research and development for the manufacturers of large engines.
